Our colours

Ayurveda is a 7,000 year old medicinal practice derived by the sages of ancient India through an innate understanding of the environment and human body. Interestingly, some of the plants prescribed in ayurveda also yield natural dyes to colour fabrics. We are big fans of the pleasant fabric colours which results from these dyes. Here are the colours used in our ‘Daydream in Wilderness’ collection.

Turmeric (Yellow)

The primary active component of turmeric — and the one that gives the spice its characteristic yellow color — is curcumin.  Curcumin is a natural antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory benefits, as well as possible benefits related to slowing the aging process and preventing Alzheimer’s disease and potentially depression. Being such a natural wonder, proving beneficial in treating conditions from cancer to Alzheimer’s disease, it had to be on our colour palette.

Tulasi (Green)

In Sanskrit, Tulasi means ‘the incomparable one’. Tulsi has been used for centuries to cure symptoms of various diseases and ailments, but its power as an adaptogen gets the most notice in modern times. It is revered in India and is granny’s go to medicine for common cold and respiratory illenesses. It is effective as anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant and is an excellent stress-buster. It would not have been possible to get the perfect natural green in our collection without this elixir of life!

Pomegranate (Peach Brown)

Everybody loves pomegranates and so do we! This nutrient dense, antioxidant rich fruit has been revered as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life. This one throws us a surprise when used in dyeing by lending the pleasing peach brown colour to our fabrics.

Vetiver (Orange)

Vetiver is used for the preparation of a decoction which used for the treatment of all kinds of poison in Toxicology. Vetiver oil is extracted and used for cosmetics, aromatherapy, herbal skincare and soaps. The French spell it vetyver and had long discovered its use for perfume making due to its excellent fixative properties. No wonder it is found today in 90% of western perfumes. For us, it is synonymous with funky giving the signature orange colour!

Indigo

Indigo is one of the oldest dye plants. A rare commodity in ancient times, it remains ever relevant as one of the most sought after natural dyes. At Itisu, we are in awe of its bold colour and are sure that you would love to have it in your wardrobe.

Triphala (Olive Green)

This magical ingredient from Ayurveda is a favourite among practitioners due to is immuno-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties and is widely recommended for its benefits on the digestive system. While all that is true, what makes it interesting to us is its skin-healing powers in cases of wounds and sunburns. It is our go to herb for the all-time favourite olive green colour.

Note: while we assure you that the dyes used are 100% safe on human skin, we are in no way claiming proven medical or therapeutic benefits from the usage of our fabrics.
